New Year’s Eve is traditionally the time for toasts to health, happiness and success. My wish for you is that you may enjoy exceptional health in the New Year. Exceptional health is more than the run-of-the-mill kind of health that many people take for granted. Health-enhancing practices make it dynamic, as compared to the passive health experienced by many people. Studies show that people with exceptional health have a longer life expectancy than others, but more significantly, they enjoy more good health during those years. Why? Exceptional health is associated with freedom from many ailments that often begin afflicting people in middle age. Research has shown that people with healthy lifestyles have a lower incidence of many chronic disorders such as diabetes and heart disease. The result is better long-term health. An editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association in September 2009 emphasized the great value of lifestyle for health: Initiatives aimed at improving lifestyle behaviors have the largest influence on reducing the future burden of disease. Each of us has more health power than we realize. Doctors can't dictate lifestyles. Being healthy is up to us. How does one attain exceptional health? Is luck involved? Don’t people who inherit good genes have an advantage? The answer is that good genes may be helpful, but they are not decisive in determining long-term health. Exceptional health is the result of much more than genes or luck. It is available to most people who adopt it as a personal goal. So, exactly how does one go about achieving exceptional health? There are ten basic principles involved in gaining exceptional health. Some people may key in on one or two principles, and that is fine, but it is not adequate to reach the goal of exceptional health. All ten principles are important, and it is crucial to keep them balanced in one’s life. The ten principles work most effectively when they all work together. I’m writing a new e-book to be published online in February or March. It is entitled, Ten Secrets of Exceptional Health. Each of the ten chapters in the book is devoted to spelling out one of the principles involved in achieving exceptional health. The book's goal is to alert you to your personal health power and to help you use it more effectively. When you make all ten secrets part of your daily life, your mastery of your own health will improve greatly. Condensed versions of the ten chapters of my book may run serially in the Chronicle beginning in February or March. Meantime, I'm teaching a course at CFCC in January in which I'm using material from this new book. Anyone interested in attending is welcome to call the registration office in Lecanto to register for the class. It will run from 5:30-7:30 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings for two weeks, January 12-21. I also have a Wellness Newsletter that I publish monthly. Subscription to the newsletter is free. Anyone wishing to receive it can subscribe by sending your name and email address to me at my email address listed in the Chronicle. The Wellness Newsletter keeps all names and email addresses strictly private. May you enjoy exceptional health in the New Year! |
